Thanassis Stavrakis
was born in Stockholm in 1973. He graduated from the School of Study and Practice of Photography (EMEF) in Athens.
He has been working as a photojournalist since 1992. Until 1996, he worked for a photo agency in Athens, covering domestic and international news and feature stories, and traveling as a correspondent throughout Greece and abroad.
From 1996-97, he has been photographing Greek and international athletic events for a Greek sports agency. Over the years, he has covered most of the major sports events that have been hosted by Greece.
He worked for the daily newspaper ETHNOS from 1997 to 1999 covering major news stories in Greece and abroad.
He also freelanced for the Greek weekly magazine EPSILON of KYRIAKATIKI ELEFTHEROTYPIA from 1999-2001.
During that collaboration he began working for the ASSOCIATED PRESS in Athens as a news photographer, a post he holds until today.
His photographs have been published in Greek daily and sport newspapers,
monthly lifestyle magazines and the international press.
He has been working with Tachydromos magazine of Ta Nea newspaper since January 2007.
His first individual exhibition came in 2000 with black and white photos of amateur soccer in Greece, which also was published in a book entitled “Amateurs.”
The photographs from “Amateurs” were awarded the first national prize in the Sports Photography category of
FUJI Film Euro Press Photo Awards’ 1999 competition and first prize in best athletic photography for 1999 by the Hellenic Sports Press Association.
In FUJI Film Euro Press Photo Awards’ 2001 competition he received
the top national prize in the Travel Photography category
for his on-goingproject “Athens from Above”,
a collection of aerial photos of daily life in Athens.
He also took part in several group photo exhibitions, including “Fotoreportazin” along with four other Greek photojournalists in 1998.
He is a member of the Hellenic Photojournalists’ Association (EFE), the Hellenic Sports Press Association (PSAT), the International Sports Press Association (AIPS) and the Foreign Press Association (FPA).
